Choosing artwork for your space

Choosing the right print size

A photograph can feel intimate or become the focus of a room, depending on its size and the space around it. Compare familiar sizes, then measure the finished frame footprint on your own wall.

The size on an artwork page is the photographic print size. A white mat and frame add to both its width and height. Check the finished outside dimensions before ordering for a tight space.

See the same photograph at three sizes

Choose an artwork and a furniture example. Enter the furniture width to compare all three sizes on the same scale. These are simple scale diagrams, not photographs of installed artwork.

12 × 8″ printIllustrated frame: 16 × 12″ outside
18 × 12″ printIllustrated frame: 24 × 18″ outside
36 × 24″ printIllustrated frame: 48 × 36″ outside

The diagrams use example outside sizes of 16 × 12, 24 × 18, and 48 × 36 inches. They include white mats and illustrative frame faces of 1, 1.5, and 3 inches respectively, based on the published framing ranges below. A specific moulding can change the finished size.

The furniture widths are adjustable. Furniture heights, wall spacing, and frame finish are illustrative; measure your actual room before deciding.

Print size and framed size are different

For these landscape examples, dimensions are shown as width × height. An 8 × 12 inch print listed in the shop appears here as 12 × 8 inches because it hangs horizontally.

Planning dimensions calculated from the current published mat and moulding specifications; final dimensions are confirmed for your chosen frame.
Print, width × heightMat on each sideMoulding faceApproximate outside size
12 × 8″1″Up to 1″Up to 16 × 12″
18 × 12″1.5″1.25–1.5″23.5–24″ × 17.5–18″
36 × 24″3″2–3″46–48″ × 34–36″

For planning, add twice the mat width and twice the moulding face to each print dimension. For example: an 18-inch-wide print + 3 inches of mat + 3 inches of moulding = a 24-inch-wide framed example.

These figures are planning estimates, not guaranteed finished measurements. Moulding profile, overlap, and custom choices affect the final result. For a tight alcove, existing grouping, or exact fit, ask for confirmed outside dimensions before ordering. See the Printing, matting and framing details.

Try the footprint on your wall

  1. Measure the clear wall area, then the width of the sofa, bed, or console beneath it. Note nearby windows, lamps, shelves, and switches.
  2. Mark the proposed outside frame dimensions with removable painter’s tape suitable for your wall. Measure the full frame, not just the image.
  3. Step back to where you normally enter or sit in the room. Compare two sizes and leave the outlines up long enough to see them in changing light.

Give the photograph the space it needs

A smaller print can reward close looking in a reading corner or beside a desk. A medium print can anchor a narrower wall or become part of a grouping. A larger print gives details and open space more presence when viewed across a room. Use your actual wall and the photograph’s proportions to choose.

Available sizes vary by photograph. On supported product pages, choose a print size and frame, then use “View it on your wall” for another perspective. The wall preview is approximate and complements measuring your space.
